Whale watching, witness magic of cetaceans
From december to march, come and witness the incredible show offered by the whales in Kalpitiya peninsula.
Surfacing from time to time, these enigmatic cetaceans will offer you an unforgettable experience.
Five different types of whales can be find in our coastline : sperm whales, blue whale, minke, melon-headed and dwarf sperm whales. In particular, the continental shelf of Kalpitiya coastline provide an ideal habitat to the Sperm whale, the largest toothed whale in the world.
The sperm whale
The sperm whale, also called cachalot, is the largest toothed predator of the world. The average length for a male is 16 meters and the head can represent up to one third of it length. It is the living being with the biggest brain of the world.
While mature male have a solitary life, young males and female stay together in group, using echolocation and vocalization underwater to communicate. During more than a decade, females nurse their young and protect them from their predators, mostly orcas. Sperm whales can live up to 60 years.
You might wonder why such a name …
Actually, their heads contain a big fluid-filled organ with a white liquid that whalers first mistook for the sperm of the whale. This organ has then been called spermaceti.
This impressive mammal is however endangered. Sperm oil has been a major industry for the two past centuries. Whaling industry uses it in oil lamp, lubricants, candles and perfumes (used as a fixative). Sperm whales have been listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
